Post [RELEASE] 10.6.2 Atom Kernel (Beta 1.0)
a 10.6.2 Atom Kernel has been found, so here is a guide that you can follow to get 10.6.2 running.

Presuming You Have 10.6.2 Using our Method, If Not, Follow The Installation Instuctions In This Thread:http://insanelywind.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=418
Quote:
Instructions For Use:

2 ) Rename the kernel "Mach_Kernel_10_6_2ATOM"
3 ) Open com.apple.Boot.plist with a plist editor
4 ) Change the plist to point to Mach_Kernel_10_6_2ATOM
5 ) Run the update.sh script
6 ) Move sleepenabler.kext to _disabled folder in the vanilla/EFIkext folder
7 ) Copy the sleepenabler.kext from the zip folder to vanilla/EFIkext

I'm confused on the plist part. How can I edit it? I saw my com.apple.Boot.plist on my EFIkext folder under Vanilla. Is that it, do I just have to open it? If so, what part of that should I edit?

Can I do this even if I'm already under 10.6.2?

yeah, this is ment to be done under 10.6.2, you edit the com.apple.Boot.plist in the EFIkext folder, you need to point the plist to the new kernel :)

Post Re: [RELEASE] 10.6.2 Atom Kernel (Beta 1.0)
How do I exactly "point" the plist to the new kernel?

This will work even if I was able to run 10.6.2 by your tut? The one using the kernel of 10.6.1

like i previously said, yeah the instuctions above are written for use with a 10.6.2 system, im not sure how to point it myself, but if you ask mars478 or dalton, they maybe able to help, and ill post it on this thread :)

I saw the link earlier in the mac osx section of the site. So, I decided to give it a try. It worked perfectly for me. I'm still testing overall stability, but it does boot and I haven't received a KP so far.

I have a 100% vanilla install - no custom kexts in s/l/e. I boot from EFI using 18seven's method from the msiwind forum (rip). I believe Dalton has contributed to that method as well.

Anyway, I ran the 10.6.2 combo update and before rebooting changed to this kernel. I don't use sleepenabler.kext, so I didn't have to remove that. When I rebooted, I had a KP. I figured I needed to update my EFI kexts - which I hadn't done. I was able to boot my install from my USB stick booter - so the problem was definitely my EFI Kexts. I went ahead and changed my boot file to EFI 10.5, switched out disabler.kext for NullCPUPowerManagement.kext (from netkas). Updated video kexts and FakeSMC v2. Ran the update script and rebooted.

After that, no KP, no problems so far. I'll keep testing.

BTW, Dan's instructions should work fine - follow his link.

Also, there are install instructions in this thread on insanelymac:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=197020

Or, alternately, prasys's site has useful upgrade information:
http://www.prasys.co.cc

Enjoy!

Well, assuming one is on 10.6.2 with the 10.6.1 kernel according to the referenced thread (viewtopic.php?f=11&t=418), you already have backups of the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 kernels (stored as /mach_kernel_10_6_1 and /mach_kernel_10_6_2).

I would think just adding/copying the /mach_kernel_10_6_2ATOM to the same location, and then doing a "sudo cp /mach_kernel_10_6_2ATOM /mach_kernel", reinstall the Update Handler (or your kext-scripts) and the rebooting would take care of it for you without having to touch the com.apple.Boot.plist.

Maybe one has to do a "chown 0:0 /mach_kernel_10_6_2ATOM" before copying it over to /mach_kernel to fix ownership.

One presumably still would have to move the sleepenabler.kext to the _disabled folder I assume.

Correct?

you could be quite right, we are currently testing other methods of installing the kernel, and will be releasing a installer later tonight :)

I am making something that will completely change everything. I am modifying 10.6.2 Installer to install the modded Mach_kernel instead, completely eliminating all the installer juggling. The first version released will be for SnowyWindOSX Users. Later I'll make my first EFI Vanilla install package. You can install everything needed in one shot. I am currently compiling a version of this package.
Stay tuned...

What are the commands for Terminal to edit my plist?

You shouldn't only copy paste instructions you can't even elaborate.

you dont edit the plist in terminal, you need a plist editior

Post Re: [RELEASE] 10.6.2 Atom Kernel (Beta 1.0)
you need a plist editor
