I have been running this mod for around 8 weeks, so far it works well but I lack the workshop time to complete the screen mount so I can slide the lcd up to reveal the keyboard.

As you can see my mod has dropped the lcd with touchscreen over the keyboard, I am still using the stock bezel but the protruding wire covers have been removed and the gapfilled with hot glue, the bezel trimmed with black vinyl.

The display lifts to access the keyboard, for ease of use I have added plastic push switches to power on and arrrow down for choosing dual boot to save lifting the screen.

For ease of use I made a stand for tge tablet, a rectangle of wood the same length as the wind cut in half and covered again with black vinyl.

To be continued.....

I'll be adding more pics as I progress, to be honest it has been as it is for some simply because it does at the moment what I want it to - act like a tablet - it is ideal for web browsing while on the couch, firefox with the drag fox plug in lets me flick up and down web pages with ease.

I have just been thinking about the possible mounting solutions for the lcd to the existing screen brackets to allow the screen to be slid up, but until I can get around to trying them out practical I won't be progressing much further.

PlyAlex - those "buttons" will make you laugh, I'll make sure I got a close up of the underside of the lcd - I made them out of a plastic smoothie cup rim, cut and bent to so when pushed down from the edge it hits the power button or down arrow for the respective one - they are held in place by the screws that hold the screen mounting bracket in place. The power button is not visible when you look at the tablet, I kept it hidden under the bezle so it can't accidently get pressed while the unit is being carried.

I was thinking I know it sounds weird but if you built some casing around a Drawer slide it would work...I'll find a pic of the kind I mean in a minute if I can...

Don't read the size you only need one about 18cm long, its just the design I wanted to show you...

PlyAlex fantastic thank you, I did have a thought along the same lines before christmas, but I couldn't think what the darn things were called and ended up googling kitchen draw runners which was all I could think of but it didn't produce much! Draw Slides, obvious when you think about it - found plenty of different lengths on ebay. Of course the one problem with these is when the LCD slides up it will leave the outer part of the slide unit behind - so they couldn't be mounted on the existing hinges - it would need to be either side of the keyboard sideways on - which could be tricky.

The only thing I really want to avoid is making it any thicker then it is now, presently there is only a couple of mm gap between the back of the LCD and the keyboard - it hasn't caused much temperature difference (and my custom stand obviously allows great airflow at the back) and it is conveniant to hold.

Probably my favourite idea at present is to have two bars running along the back of the lcd, mounted to the existing LCD mounts points via some blocks to allow around 4mm clearance from the back of the lcd. Each runner will have a narrow gap down the centre - allowing me to put a bolt with concave washer on through - then though one of the hinge holes and fix with a nut - Thus the lcd will slide back on the mounting point where the existing hinges are.

Really I need to stop just having ideas, and put some practical work in trying different methods to see what works best!

Found this picture - this is what I need to be aiming at:-

So you want it to slide up like the Nokia N97.

That may be a bit hard to do, but if you do manage to get the screen slide up, I will be doing this mod!

When I get some sort of image making software I'll make a mock up of the kind of assembly you would need to do that...I wouldn't mind trying it out myself

The cable for the LCD is long enough as is to allow for the movement - I had the LCD literally flat on the counter top behind the body of the machine while working on it. The touchscreen cables need extending though, to provide enough length to lay the touchscreen flat over the keyboard - I just used cables from a USB cable I hacked up and soldered them together.

Looking at that picture the way that HTC pro slides is a far better system then I was thinking of, all I need is a strip of metal thick enough to hold the lcd without bending, which needs to be bent to go up the sides of the lcd and then bent again to form the mounting rail - either side will need blocks the full height of the LCD with a channel in for the rail to slide up and down.

Finally got around to taking some quick picks of the underside of my tablet lcd

http://www.pennineltd.co.uk/advent/tabletbackoflcd.jpg

Pretty messy and lashings of electrical tape, the two wifi antenna are taped to the back of the lcd, and then the touch screen cable which has been extended - the messy bits are two joins - one where i soldered to the actual touch screen tail and the other to extend the cables a bit more.

http://www.pennineltd.co.uk/advent/tabletbuttons.jpg

Not a great pic but these are my buttons to save opening up the device to power on or choose second option in dual boot. Cunningly fashioned from smoothie cups bent into shape, and held in place by the screws that hold the lcd mounts in place.

Hopefully over the next few days I will get chance to work on the sliding mechanism and to take some pics in decent light.

i've uploaded this video of the tablet running windows 7, put it together using imovie on osx using the tablet of course - not sure how long it will stay up because i added dust junkys as the soundtrack. I am adding in keyboard example and reediting the vid now.

Video Edit 1:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5saups5d43I
Nobody told me there was a minute just after boot up repeated in the original! Added some more transistions and additional soundtrack along with touch screen keyboard example (in poor light **** iphone)

Video original (rubbish ignore it!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHxF_nU7Eio

I've also uploaded a video of OSX, no fancy editing for that uploaded it straight off my iPhone as it's getting late.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bUV9vGM ... tube_gdata

despite planning on showing keyboard touch input on both os's, somehow I forgot on both videos. I'll do a couple of short videos of typing on the touch screen just for reference.

Nice videos looks really good with the touchscreen. It does work with your finger though doesn't it?

It works with your fingerNAIL - not actual touch like as you get with the iPhone - something to do with it being capacitive resistance - and of course it is single touch only. For the sake of precision (especially in OSX where those little buttons to minimise or close windows are very small) a stylus like pen is a handy tool. If you have a little bit of a finger nail you can get away pretty well using that for most tasks.

I never thought anyone would be so interested in my hacked up wind, touch screens in the u100 aren't new and this is only really a different take on it.

Anyway, a new vid is up, this is the very first attempt at a mounting and so is obviously rough - basically this uses the hinge brackets, with thin mdf board top and bottom so the hinge bracket slides between them.

It works, but gravity is against me - the lcd is heavy so it sags down when slid right up - the brackets are not wide enough to provide enough support - but any wider and the screen would not slide far enough either up or down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcycRuKhrbI

Adding another video now showing the slide mechanism while on, it shows that keys are depressed while sliding the screen - not good.
