the problem was me, i got caught up in the new partition, vanilla etc and forget that the realtek driver was an installer. I used the 10.5.6,7,8. driver that included the auto closer. it works like a charm even the auto closer works.

I want to be 100% sure before I follow this guide. I already have a Windows XP partition setup and running XP. Now if I follow this guide will I lose that XP partition/access to it from boot menu? Not be able to boot into XP.

Thanks. So it looks like my only option to keep the XP partition is to follow the MBR guide for retail install. http://insanelywind.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=55. Again not sure since in the guide they are installing XP after the OSX install.

Sorry for the stupid questions. Just alot of information going around so its hard to get it straight.

So I finally got a running MAC!! Thanks to all who helped out.. One problem so far though I used your EFI Finisher package and now my trackpad slowly drifts up and to the left if my finger is just resting on it. Before I installed the EFI Finisher package the trackpad was just fine. Ive tried changing all the settings in the system preferences but nothing seems to be working to fix this issue. Otherwise I have a working MacOS (Im floored that it actually works!) If anyone can help me out with this issue I would appreciate it. It is very annoying especially when dragging.

Problem:

Since I do't have a 8GB usb stick around, I tried to follow this tutorial with my SnowyWindOSX.Alpha dvd. At the end of the installation, I did not get any error messages like some of you got, which was supposingly normal, before my first reboot.

Rebooting with a CF card (that I installed only Chameleon) & select my MacOSX partition, & ran EFI Finisher, I can boot into my SL. However, I do not have sound (the sound icon in menu bar is greyed) & resolution is stuck at 800x600.

I assume my problem came from not following the guide completely. Can anyone tell me what changes to the steps I should follow if I only have the DVD instead of a 8GB usb stick?

Did you install onto a GUID or an MBR Partition? If you did not install onto a GUID then you do not have the 200MB EFI Partition which to install your kexts via EFI Finisher.

Yes, it was GUID.

Could my mach_kernel problem be related to my restoring the Mac 10.6 to the untitled partition? I mounted the Retail Install DVD then dragged the disk icon to the source field and the untitled to the destination field. Is that correct? Or do I have to view the contents and drag the folder to the source field?

So Dalton. I have a question. I can install your EFI Finisher ok and everything works.. But when I try to update the kexts using the update script, something horribly goes wrong. I get a frozen boot screen and even in verbose it just stops. Im not sure what is happening, but when I boot off my usb stick and install the EFI Finisher again everything works again. I am trying to trade out some kexts for the touchpad, but every time it freezes up. Even when I put the kexts back in the EFI folder in the vanilla folder and run the update script is does the same thing. The only way I can get it back is by running the EFI Finisher. I will post a screen shot here shortly, but I do not have my camera ATM.

This is almost the same as the old Vanilla tutorial, but now I have created a package to handle the second half for you. I must give credit to Munky for paving the way, and to 18seven for designing this tutorial in its original form.

Vanilla USB Installer

This part is still the same, but I included it for ease. This way you dont have to search one and then the other.

Once you have our DMG/ISO of Retail Snow Leopard installation disc, insert a blank 8gb usb stick into your MSI.

Open up disk utility and create on the usb two partitions in MBR format:

1 partition of 200MB named: BOOTLOADER

1 unnamed partition with the rest of the space

MUST be in MacOs Extended(Journaled)

Once your usb is partitioned you can now restore the DMG/ISO file of Snow Leopard onto the bigger size partition on it. Open disk utility and choose the restore tab then on the source field put in or drag your Snow Leopard dmg/iso file and in Destination field put in or drag your usb unnamed partition.

Once the restore process is done, download chameleon 2 RC3 by Dr. Hurt modded by Dalton: http://www.mediafire.com/?tvqmqzwjznd

Install it on the BOOTLOADER partition of your usb.

Now you are ready to get to work.

Vanilla Install

So you followed the previous guide on building a bootable snow leopard installation usb, now you will follow this one to make your installation 100% vanilla, meaning that when you will update your system with software updater you will have a free system not screwed up by updates because all of our kexts will be on a hidden EFI partition. So let’s do this.

Boot your MSI Wind with your bootable snow leopard installation usb stick plugged in.

Hit F11 on the splash screen to boot from usb and wait for the install process to boot.

Now go on the Menu - Disk Utility

Choose the disk where you want to install and choose the option Partition

Choose 1 partition in scheme and in options BE SURE to set GUID and in Mac OS Extended(Journaled). Hit apply and format it, once done, continue install, you do not have to customize anytihing, just install.

Once installation is successful restart as required BUT be SURE you have your usb still plugged in because you will use it to boot your fresh installation.

Hit F11 again on the bios splash screen and choose your usb

On the chameleon selection screen choose your newly installed partition, and start it.

Ok nice you are on the Desktop of your new Snow Leopard.

Congrats!

Now that you are at the desktop of your newly installed Snow Leopard. Run this package:
Attachment:
EFI Finisher.zip

This package will automatically format the EFI partition, install everything into the EFI partition, and install the Chameleon 2 RC3 bootloader to it. It also installs the correctly working display file from Mars. Also it will put the Vanilla forder in the root of the partition. It is the same Vanilla folder as before, so that you can interact with the EFI partition later if you need to.

If you want to swap kexts in the EFI partition replace the ones you dont want in the /Vanilla/EFIkext folder with the ones you do want, then run the 27ae and update scripts.

Enjoy!

@Dalton I have finally installed using your Vanilla Tutorial and would like to know how to proceed with 10.6.2 update. Do I just install it or is there a tutorial for that also.

Hi Dalton63841

First of all, thanks for the tutorial. I have installed Leopard Dual Boot with XP along with a separate data partition. I followed instruction from msiwind.net forum. I have few questions -

1. Does the name of the 2nd partition of the USB thumdrive matter, i.e., do I have to call it unnamed?

2. Following this tutorial, should I be able to create a dual boot; will it work? How about the data partition? My current partition is as follows, 1. (EFI), 2. OS X, 3. Data and 4. XP. Plan to follow the same scheme.

Any other advice?

Thanks for your time.

you install 10.6.2 like it's described here viewtopic.php?f=11&t=418
and then you install the new kernel like it's described here viewtopic.php?f=11&t=449

and there was no need to quote dalton's entire post

1. With this revised tutorial the partition names no longer matter.

2. If you want to have a dual boot you need to have XP on the first partition, then Data, then OSX.

Thanks very much for quick reply. One more question, will Chameleon boot Mac by default in this configuration? If not, how can I do that?

Thanks

I have been using the following to update after an OS upgrade
Code: Select all
sudo -s
cd /Vanilla/EFIkext
./27ae.sh
./update.sh

So what is the UpdateEFI program used for? is the above code only when you change kexts in the Vanilla folder and UpdateEFI is for OS updates. Sorry i am just a little confused.

The 27ae script creates/updates patched GMA950 kext for native GFX resolution and acceleration. The update script takes the changes you made, in this case updating your GFX kext, and loads it to your efi. I put some other steps in there as well but that is the gist. Open the script and give it a gandar, remember if you don't understand a command use man i.e.

Code: Select all
man man

I hope I have this correct. If I update a kext in my Vanilla/EFI/ folder I run the 27ae script to make the change. Then I run the updateEFI to update the the EFI partition? I am a little thick when it comes to this stuff.

No! If you change a kext in you Vanilla/EFIkext folder, you only need to run ./update.sh.

UpdateEFI patches the graphics and it only needs to be ran at system updates.

OK so in order to update a kext file in the Vanilla/EFIkext folder all I do is
sudo -s
cd /Vanilla/EFIkext
./update.sh

Now if there is an OS update I can use the UpdateEFI application I put in the utility folder or run:
sudo -s
cd /Vanilla/EFIkext
./27ae.sh
./update.sh

Do I have it correct now?
