EDIT: Since Dalton has been absent, soon we will not be providing support for this tutorial. It is recommended to wait for the new tutorials, which will be coming in the next week or two!

This is almost the same as the old Vanilla tutorial, but now I have created a package to handle the second half for you. I must give credit to Munky for paving the way, and to 18seven for designing this tutorial in its original form.

First off we now have two ways to get Mac onto your Wind.

1. If you have an external DVD drive you can jump over to here: http://insanelywind.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=955.

2. You can create a USB Installer with a retail image and chameleon bootloader with this tutorial:

Vanilla USB Installer

This part is still the same, but I included it for ease. This way you dont have to search one and then the other.

Once you have our DMG/ISO of Retail Snow Leopard installation disc, insert a blank 8gb usb stick into your MSI.

Open up disk utility and create on the usb two partitions in MBR format:

1 partition of 200MB named: BOOTLOADER

1 unnamed partition with the rest of the space

MUST be in MacOs Extended(Journaled)

Once your usb is partitioned you can now restore the DMG/ISO file of Snow Leopard onto the bigger size partition on it. Open disk utility and choose the restore tab then on the source field put in or drag your Snow Leopard dmg/iso file and in Destination field put in or drag your usb unnamed partition.

Once the restore process is done, download chameleon 2 RC3 by Dr. Hurt modded by Dalton: http://www.mediafire.com/?tvqmqzwjznd

Install it on the BOOTLOADER partition of your usb.

Now you are finished creating the installer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vanilla Install

Plug your USB installer into a usb port.

Hit F11 on the splash screen to boot from usb and wait for the install process to boot.

Now go on the Menu - Disk Utility

Choose the disk where you want to install and choose the option Partition

Choose 1 partition in scheme and in options BE SURE to set GUID and in Mac OS Extended(Journaled). Hit apply and format it, once done, continue install, you do not have to customize anytihing, just install.

It will say it's failed, but don't worry carry on with these following steps ... restart as required BUT be SURE you have your usb still plugged in because you will use it to boot your fresh installation.

Hit F11 again on the bios splash screen and choose your usb

On the chameleon selection screen choose your newly installed partition, and start it.

Ok now you are on the desktop of your new Snow Leopard.

Congrats!

Now that you are at the desktop of your newly installed Snow Leopard. Run this package:
Image

This package will automatically format the EFI partition, install everything into the EFI partition, and install the Chameleon 2 RC4 bootloader to it. It also installs the correctly working display file from Mars.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10.6.2 Update

Now either open software updates and mark the 10.6.2 update, or download the 10.6.2 Combo update.

Click install and sit back and wait.

When it asks you to reboot do so, then sit back and wait again. after everything is moved into place it will automatically reboot and you will be happily at 10.6.2.

10.6.3 Update

Stock Wireless Card drivers

As luck would have it we are blessed with wireless cards that will work with OS X. However they do need third party drivers and a third party utility to use. It is for that reason most of us choose to swap it out for a native wifi card. For those who haven't, here are the drivers.

Hey a Vanilla Install with NO Terminal. If you use my UpdateEFI app, then there isnt even terminal use for updates. How awesome is that.

As it stands the only thing that needs Terminal is changing out certain kexts for others, and changing DSDT, smbios, or boot.plist. I could remove the need for Terminal there but come on...

Now the thing is to have that package either on the customize screen of installation or auto -launch on first boot. Not an easy task.

Actually i have an idea about that. I think I can add that package and one for those on MBR to the customize screen.

Then if they go GUID they check this one, and if they go MBR they check the other instead.

imho that would only complicate things. especially for noobs. i think we should all let go of mbr as a part of past. i only chose it because i had problems with the first install, and without thinking revereted to the old hackintosh tradition dating back to the tiger days, when mbr installs were generally more stable. i can't see anyone wanting mbr, since now windows can boot from a guid drive, too.

What is better MBR or GUID? What is the difference? I saw a tutorial here for an MBR install by machvolim. it looked like a lot of work but this GUID install does not. And can I install windows since you said it can boot windows; Sorry but I am a noob about all this.

*edit* And what does Vanilla mean?

partitioning schemes are information at the very beginning of your physical disk and are a way your computer knows at what sector do your partitions start and end. it's also a means of loading the boot information that loads the kernel of your system (and thus startup begins).

MBR stands for master boot record, this is the partitioning scheme that dos used to have, and it still lives on in windows, although windows 7 can (if i recall correctly) be installed on a GUID drive.

GUID is basically GPT, gnu partition table which i think linux (and maybe freebsd) uses. it has replaced the old Apple Partition Map, which was used to start up powerpc-based computers. now all intel-based macs use this scheme.

why is this important for us? because GUID has a little hidden partition (around 200mb) at the beginning ('efi' partition), enabling us to put our kernel extension (.kext) and other boot-time overrides there, this way making the system on our os x partition almost untouched. GUID is also more easily manageable. creating new partitions and resizing existing ones is easier and most of the time doesn't render your drive unbootable (on MBR this can happen often, and then you have to re-write the master boot record).

hope this clears out some confusion.

---

edit: 'vanilla' means that you're using the retail disk to install and then modify it according to your needs. this used to be the more complicated way in the past, that's why people made 'distros', which are already customised. vanilla is more clean, too, because it uses the efi partition for overrides (explained above). and you can brag about having an 'untouched' system. updates are easier, too, and are less likely to render your system unusable.
as you can see in these forums, vanilla install is currently more pain-free than using the distro, thanks to our beloved dalton. :)

Thank you. And yes it does; However, you said windows 7. Can windows xp be used in place of windows 7 on a GUPID?

i think there's a way, but i'm not really sure. maybe it has to do something with the hacked boot camp assistant. search around or ask mars or dalton, i really don't want to mislead you..

You can use a hacked version of Boot Camp, that can be found here if you are on SnowyWindOSX, because it does not use the EFI partition.

The hacked Boot Camp Assistant formats the EFI partition, so if on Vanilla I dont suggest using.

Or if you are going to start with SnowyWindOSX and convert it to Vanilla, I suggest doing that AFTER you use Boot Camp to install XP.

@dalton: sorry, more questions.

1. you didn't mention needing the vanilla.zip's contents (from the previous vanilla guide), but now that i downloaded your efi finisher, i see it has no kexts in it.. so vanilla.zip is still needed, right?

2. so how do i update this thing once it's installed? the same way, i.e., running the update and then the scripts from vanilla.zip?

3. in the vanilla.zip, there's no dsdt.aml beside the update.sh in the DSDT folder. is this normal?

thanks,
bamdad

It does contain EVERYTHING. It does NOT contain the DSDT however because a DSDT from one computer can make another one KP. You can try using my dsdt, but I will not include it by default.

The last 2 paragraphs of the original post:

This package will automatically format the EFI partition, install everything into the EFI partition, and install the Chameleon 2 RC3 bootloader to it. It also installs the correctly working display file from Mars. Also it will put the Vanilla forder in the root of the partition. It is the same Vanilla folder as before, so that you can interact with the EFI partition later if you need to.

If you want to swap kexts in the EFI partition replace the ones you dont want in the /Vanilla/EFIkext folder with the ones you do want, then run the 27ae and update scripts.

They are preferred but not required. Without a DSDT you need one extra kext to make the Wind Sleep when you close the lid.

DSDT is a part of the bios that tells the OS how to handle certain things. The bootloader allows the DSDT to be extracted into a file that can be changed to fix hardware incompatibilities, visual fixes, and other things.
